Bill Gamble Death, Obituary – An Essay Presented as a Memorial to Honor Mr. Gamble’s Life and Given as a Tribute in Loving Memory of Mr. Gamble – This evening, we are writing to you to share some really distressing news with you, and we want you to know that we are sorry in advance for any hardship that this may cause. The unexpected passing of Mr. Bill Gamble, a long-standing member of our faculty who had taught in the mathematics department for thirty-four years and had taught many of you, occurred this morning as a result of complications from a medical procedure. Mr. Gamble had been a member of our faculty for a very long time.
Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who knew and appreciated Mr. Gamble in this community. He had devoted his whole time as an educator to working in that specific field up to that point. During a stretch of time that included a considerable chunk of our existence, Mr. Gamble served as a member of our instructional staff here at this institution. There are no words that can sufficiently describe the agony and disbelief that many of you, and maybe all of us, are feeling right now. There are no words that can adequately communicate the pain and disbelief that you are experiencing. There are no words that can fully portray the sense of utter desolation and misery.
To try to do justice to the intricacy of the situation by merely putting it into words is not possible. On Wednesday, we are going to celebrate Mass with the whole school community, which includes each and every student, in addition to the teachers and staff members who work at the institution. Mr. Gamble was a teacher at Notre Dame for the first thirty-four years of his life, and he never missed an occasion to talk about how much he valued the time spent with his pupils there. The majority of his life was spent serving as a professor at Notre Dame, where he worked. Now that he is not present, everyone who was a member of our community feels a profound loss for him and is acutely aware of the void that he leaves behind.
Our prayer goes something like this: “Grant unto him, O Lord, eternal rest, and let perpetual light shine upon him.” This is in accordance with the traditions and customs of our Catholic religion. (Grant him eternal rest, and may the light of eternity shine upon him.) By the grace of God, may his soul and the souls of all the faithful people who have died away rest in peace; and may the same be said for the souls of all those other individuals who have passed away as well.
