Bruno Polo Death, Obituary – Toronto Ontario, Bruno was a member of the swimming, water polo, and football teams. During his senior year, not only did he serve as Commander of his V-12 unit, but he was also Vice President of the Student Body. In his role as an original member of the Ricketts House Rowdies, he was responsible for initiating the Brake Drum ritual, assisting in the assembly of a running car in the bedroom of a housemate, and returning quickly and unfazed after being kidnapped and left naked by a rival college because he had the foresight to conceal twenty dollars in the dental bridgework that he wore.
After serving as a lieutenant in the United States Submarine Service during World War II and the Korean War, Bruno went on to work for Shell Chemical as an engineer at a factory and later as a manager in the company’s Head Office engineering department. Beginning in the early 1970s, he was responsible for establishing and leading Shell’s Process Design Environmental Engineering group all the way up until the year 1987, when he took early retirement.
Bruno relocated to Santa Barbara, where he became an accomplished golfer (scoring seven holes in one) and where he spent more than 3,000 hours transcribing chemistry and physics textbooks for Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic.
He enjoyed telling people that he had scored the winning touchdown at the Rose Bowl (there is a picture of it), and when they were astonished, he would explain them that the Rose Bowl is a stadium, and the game was between Caltech and Pomona.
