Carol Spitler Obituary, Death – Carol Kay Spitler was born on June 10, 1937, in Loyalton, South Dakota. Soon after, Leonard and Betty (Petersen) Duling took her in and raised her as their own child. Carol died at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa, on January 18, 2023. She was 85 years, 7 months, and 8 days old. At Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon, Carol was baptized and confirmed. She went to the Audubon Community Schools and graduated with the Class of 1955 from Audubon High School. Carol worked at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital when she was in her last year of high school. She went to school and became a Certified Nurse’s Assistant. For 43 years, until she retired, she worked at the Hospital as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant.
Carol was lucky enough to have two kids named Barry and Tammy. Carol went to Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Audubon her whole life. She was in the Ladies Circle and taught Bible school. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and the hospital’s Historian. She made many scrapbooks to remember the many changes that took place at the hospital during the years she worked there. Carol had breast cancer and beat it. As long as her health let her, she took part in walks and other activities to help lead the fight against cancer. She loved collecting teapots and had over 150 of them in all different shapes and sizes. Her collection began when her mother gave her the first teapot, which was a long time ago.
Carol moved to the Exira Care Center in January 2018. She liked all the activities and took part in them, and she always went to church on Sundays. She had been a CNA for a long time, so it was in her blood to help the many people who lived at the Care Center. She was also kind and caring, which made it easy for her to help them.
Carol loved spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she always had her grandchildren stay the night and make Christmas cookies and other treats with her. Carol was also happy to have three great-grandchildren and spend time with them.
Her parents, Leonard and Betty Duling, and her son Barry “Bear” Spitler died before her. Her granddaughter Erika Veach Holland also died before her. Her survivors include her daughter Tammy and her husband Randy Shaw of Des Moines, Iowa; her grandchildren Melissa and her husband Brett Kessler of Grimes, Iowa and Tanner Shaw of Des Moines, Iowa; her great-grandchildren Klarissa Veach, Amilya Veach, and James Holland, all of Des Moines, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.
