Christy Thacker Death, Obituary – The boys’ and girls’ basketball doubleheader that was scheduled to take place between Cherokee and Volunteer on Friday evening has been moved to Thursday at 4 p.m. in order to provide Cherokee’s teaching staff and students with the opportunity to attend the memorial service for Volunteer teacher Christy Thacker, who passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday. The service will take place on Thursday. Friday was meant to be the day of the game when it was first scheduled. The obituary for Christy Thacker may be found here; but, owing to technical issues, it will not be published in the paper until Saturday. Christy Ann Thacker, who was 47 years old and lived in Rogersville at the time of her passing on January 10, 2023, passed away on that day. She was a consistent member of the Independence Missionary Baptist Church congregation. She was the area director for the Area 32 Special Olympics, she had a passion for teaching, and she enjoyed going fishing. She taught for 17 years, during which time she made a difference in the lives of a significant number of her pupils. Her great-grandfather Charlie Horton, her grandmother Minnie Massengill, and her sister Sandra Horton all before her in death. She was the only surviving member of her family. Her mother, George Horton, her father, George Horton, and her sister, Sandra Horton, all passed away before she was born.
She is survived by her loving husband of 29 years,
Mike Thacker; her daughter, Ali Thacker (Katie Jones); her mother, Mary Marshall; her brothers, Donald Sellers, Mardy Horton (Melissa), and Chris Marshall (Stephanie); her adorable little dogs, Ellie Mae and Cash; and all of her Special Olympics Family. She was an athlete in the Special Olympics for many years. She participated in the Special Olympics Family for a considerable amount of time. The family will receive guests at the Christian-Sells Funeral Home on Friday, January 13, 2023, commencing at five o’clock in the afternoon and continuing until seven o’clock in the evening. Tonight at seven o’clock, the funeral services will get underway, and the Reverends Larry Wolfe and Keith Thacker will be in charge of the proceedings.
On the 14th of January, 2023, at eleven in the morning, there will be a ceremony at the graveside that will take place at Highland Cemetery. Their grandfather’s casket will be carried by their uncles Keith Thacker, Scottie Thacker, and Kevin Thacker, as well as by their cousins Mardy Horton, Marvin Durham, and Elvis Massengill. It has been decided that Donald Sellers will carry out the duties of Honorary Pallbearer.
