George Spellman Obituary, Death – Today, our equestrian community has been dealt a severe setback that will have a significant impact as a direct result of George Spellman’s unexpected decision to leave the organization. This will have a significant impact on the future of our sport. It is highly likely that George is well-known to everyone who is familiar with The Devon Horse Show in any capacity, which is to say practically everyone. George was a judge at the show for many years. It was possible to locate him working his “Devon Magic” behind the scenes while wearing his red shirt to ensure that everything went off without a hitch and that there were no hiccups. Because of his red clothing, it was very easy to recognize him.
There was always something new to learn, whether it was how to operate a tractor, a water truck, a golf cart, or a skid steer; dress up in “Devon Drag” for Dressage at Devon; or help a food seller with their business, as demonstrated in this picture. To say that George’s collection included a wide variety of hats and caps would be a big understatement. George’s collection included a wide variety of hats and caps. He was in possession of each and every one.
George was a good buddy and an extremely successful businessperson in his own right. He was the kind of person that was always willing to provide a hand to those in need, was good at finding solutions to difficult questions, and was good at finding ways to make things function properly. In the year 1896, he participated in one of the most well-known equestrian events, and as a result, he had a huge impact on the lives of a great number of people. Because of this, those of us whose lives he greatly affected will never see Devon in the same way again. It will never be the same place.
When he leaves, I’m going to miss him very much. I can’t wait to tell him. I have no doubt about it. In this trying time, my sincere condolences go out to his family as well as all of his friends and the people who had the honor of working for him. May he rest in peace. Fortunately, Heaven keeps diet green tea on tap. I cannot wait until the next time we get the chance to talk to one another.
