Gerald Brewer Death, Obituary – On Thursday, January 19, 2023, at around 2:00 am, Gerald R. “Jerry” Brewer, 88, of 192 East Avenue, Hornell, New York, passed away at the Highland Park Nursing Facility in Wellsville, New York, following a protracted illness. A product of Charles and Margaret (Sisko) Brewer, he entered the world on July 20, 1934, in Hornell. Jerry grew up in Hornell and attended the local high school until he graduated (Class of 1953). He spent 35 years at Foster Wheeler Energy Corp. in Dansville. Jerry, a Hornell resident, and sports fanatic was committed to supporting local youth teams. For many years, he was an integral part of the Hornell Little League organization, both on the board and as a coach and umpire.
He also participated in the Grasshoppers, Midget Football, and Babe Ruth leagues. Jerry was a sports fan who loved to bowl, bow hunt and holler at the TV during every NFL game, especially those involving the Miami Dolphins and the Dallas Cowboys, his two favorite teams. In addition, he was a longtime participant in the Knights of Columbus in Hornell.
Jerry attended both St. Ann’s Church and Our Lady of the Valley Parish, where he worked as an usher and Eucharistic Minister over the years. He was devoted to his weekly adoration hour in the Adoration Chapel, served on the Pastoral Council, and helped maintain the cemetery. Jerry was a dedicated Catholic who frequently attended Mass and helped his neighbors and acquaintances. The legacy Jerry leaves behind is one of a man who lived to serve others.
His wife, the former Nancy Girondo, passed away on March 11, 2003; they tied the knot on June 27, 1953, at St. Ann’s Church. Jerry’s sibling Joyce Lockwood and his in-laws Tony and Helen Girondo, Dominic and Roberta Girondo, Sophie and Bill Goldstein, Gary Lloyd, Arthur Lockwood, and Arthur Burritt all before him in death. His parents, Charles and Margaret Brewer, also passed away. Jerry is survived by his children, Tom (Jeanne), Paul (Brittany), and Mark (Richard McGowan) Brewer, all of Hornell; his grandchildren, Nicole (Chris) McIntosh of Canaseraga, Chris (Melanie) Brewer of Hornell, and Krista (Jacob) Brewer of Hornell; his great-grandchildren, Jenna (Christian) and Brendan (Brendan) Brewer of Canaser
Thank you so much from Jerry’s family to everyone at Updyke’s Willow Ridge for the three years of the excellent care he received there. No calling hours are being held in observance of Jerry’s wishes. At 10:00 AM on Monday, at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell, New York, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held. Interment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fremont, New York.
