Janet Bastian Obituary, Death – Janet Rose Bastian (née Dobberpuhl), 91, of West Bend, died away in The Woodlands Senior Park in Fond du Lac on January 16, 2023, with her family at her side. Janet was born in the Town of Hubbard on July 16, 1931, to the late Hilbert and Alice (Wagner) Dobberpuhl. She married Burdet “Bud” Griep at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Mayville on December 9, 1950. His death occurred on September 17, 1957. On July 1, 1972, she wed her second husband, Rufus Giese, at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in West Bend. His death occurred on December 22, 1983. On September 1, 1991, she was married to Curtis Bastian at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in West Bend.
Curtis expired on March 27, 2018. Janet was a widow with four children under the age of six at the age of 27. When her children were little, she worked in Mayville at Grocery and Dime shops as well as at Purity Cheese. She then spent 22 years at the West Bend Company. Janet was a member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Mayville until 1970, when she relocated to West Bend and joined St. John’s Ev. She liked seeing the United States, Hawaii, Alaska, and Germany on several occasions. She was a member of the “We Love to Dance” polka club for sixteen years and spent her summers at the East Shore Resort on Rolling Stone Lake. Janet was a social butterfly who enjoyed crocheting, playing Bingo and cards, visiting casinos in Wisconsin, and organizing family gatherings.
She always looked forward to family visits in Minnesota, particularly with her cousin Marion, who was also a young widow with small children. She liked making new acquaintances at the Cedar Ridge Senior Community in West Bend and the Woodlands Senior Park in Fond du Lac over the past five years. She treasured time spent with her children, grandkids, and great-grandchildren beyond anything else. Janet’s legacy will be carried on by her three children, Joann (Denny) Sabel of Fond du Lac, Tom (Jeanne) Griep of Mayville, and Norman Griep of Watertown; her brother, Ronald Dobberpuhl of Horicon; and her grandchildren, Julie (Jeff) Roehrig of Fond du Lac, Brian (Brandy) Sabel of Marinette, and Jessica (Gary) Boylen of Suamico.
Emily and Megan Roehrig, Nick, Kayla, Riley and Lily Sabel, and Charlie and Jensen Boyehen are Great-Grandchildren. And special nieces, Sara Dobberpuhl of Howards Grove and Nancy (Willwock) Leystra of Mayville. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends; her sisters-in-law, Marilyn Wiesner, Bernice Bastian, and Donna Dahlinger; and her sisters-in-law, Bernice Bastian, and Donna Dahlinger. Along with her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by her son, Gordon Griep; daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Keith Schoenike; daughter-in-law, Coralli Griep; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ann Dobberpuhl, Berniece and Lester Eberle, and LaVern and Arlene Griep.
Janet was also predeceased by the brothers and sisters of Rufus Giese and Curtis Bastian, as well as her in-laws, Louis and Viola Griep, Richard and Amanda Giese, and Harvey and Erna Bastian. Visitation will be conducted on Saturday, January 21, 2023, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 830 S. 6th Avenue, West Bend, Wisconsin 53095.
