Jerome Schmidt Death, Obituary – Jerome A. Schmidt, 86 years old, of Pulaski, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2023, with his family at his side. Jerome Schmidt was born on January 30th, 1936 to Andrew and Mary (Gebauer) Schmidt in Spencer, Wisconsin. Jerome, graduated from Loyal High School in 1954. He was stationed in Japan and Korea while serving in the United States Army. After he was discharged from the military, he returned to Loyal to work on the family farm. A year later, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin River Falls to begin what would become a fruitful career in pre-vet. The wedding took place on August 27, 1960, between Jerome and Karen Wichman. In 1965, he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota, having previously graduated from the University of Wisconsin–River Falls.
After completing his education, Jerome established a veterinary clinic in Edgar, Wisconsin. After being in a car accident in 1966, he suffered 23 broken bones and was placed in a body cast. He went back to his job and continued working up until the year 1991 when he and his wife moved to the state of Missouri. It didn’t take long for his passion for animals to convince him to go back to work. Jerome ran a small-animal mobile practice until 2017. In 2017, Doc and Karen made the move to Wisconsin so that they could be closer to their families. He had animals with him at all times. In Edgar, Doc brought up his family on a farm that included roughly forty horses and a variety of different cattle. Jerome and Karen have successfully brought up two world champions.
Their children enjoyed spending every summer weekend at horse shows and participating in country life. After retiring, they moved to a ranch in Missouri that was 270 acres in size and included Missouri Fox Trotters, Zebus, Watusi, and Italian Chianina cattle, as well as New Zealand Booroola and Marino sheep. Doc was the owner and the auctioneer. He was also the president of the school board and judged horse events. Karen, his wife of 62 years, and his three children — Jacqueline Bergquist (friend Mark Roberts), Oshkosh; Tammy Lipsey (Michael), Pulaski; and Jay Schmidt (Tammy), Edgar — are the only ones who have survived him.
The accomplishments of his six grandchildren—Jordyn, Kayla, Austin, Samantha, and Tyler—made him very pleased. Andrew (Faye) Schmidt, Dorthy Ertl, Evelyn (John) Schultz, Judy Schmidt, Larry Waldhauser, and several nephews and nieces survive him. His brother Donald Schmidt, his sister Marie Waldhauser, and both of his parents, Andrew and Mary, passed away before he was born.It is important to express gratitude to the caregivers at Jerome’s Bristol Hospice and Emerald Bay Memory Care. A Celebration of Life will be held in the springtime in Edgar, Wisconsin. Check the funeral home’s website for any updated information regarding the schedule.
