Jonathan Dowie Death, Obituary – Jonathan Dowie of Des Moines, Iowa, has sadly passed away unexpectedly in a car accident with loved ones, family and the entire community left heartbroken and in grievance. Jonathan attended school in Kearny, where he excelled as an athlete and was recognized with letters in baseball, basketball, soccer, and football. Jonathan acquired his education at Kearny schools. He was the team captain for the baseball team that won the Greater Newark Tournament in 1943, and he also played shortstop for the club.
In that year, the tournament was held in Newark. As a result of his achievements in the sport of baseball, he was selected for induction into the Kearny High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Soon after he graduated from Kearny High School in January 1944, he enlisted in the United States Army, which at the time was in the thick of battle in World War II. He served in the army until the end of the war. He was an infantryman who served with the 163rd Regimental Combat Team of the 41st Infantry Division in the Pacific Theater of Operations during the war.
During his time there, he was a participant in multiple island assaults against Japanese forces. It was during the Battle of Biak Island that he was injured by enemy fire. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater of Operations during the war. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, as well as the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. After Jonathan moved back to Kearny, he enrolled in Jonathan Marshall College and became active in the local baseball and basketball communities.
this time, Jonathan also played for the local Kearny baseball and basketball teams. Because teaching and managing Kearny youth baseball teams was something that he thoroughly enjoyed doing, he devoted a significant amount of his spare time to doing it. He was a tremendous enthusiast of baseball. In 1955, Mr. Dowie was hired to the Kearny Police Department.
In 1962, he was appointed to the Kearny Fire Department. In 1977, as a result of an occurrence in which he saved a life, he was granted the title of “Fireman of the Year.” Following his retirement in Spring Lake Heights, New Jersey, where he had worked for the Town of Kearny for a combined total of 32 years, he moved to Jupiter, Florida. Prior to his retirement, he had worked for the Town of Kearny.
Jonathan is survived by his wife of 65 years, Anne V. Dowie (nee Kelly); son, John Dowie and his wife, Ann; daughter, Suzanne DeLuca and her husband, Jeffrey; and grandchildren, Catherine and Jonathan Dowie, as well as Jeffrey, Joshua, and Jesse DeLuca. Jonathanwas married to Anne V. Dowie (nee Kelly) for 65 years. John and Anne V. Dowie (also known as Kelly) were married for a total of 65 years. His parents, William and Rubina Dowie, as well as his brothers William, Robert, and Walter Dowie, all went away before he did. His siblings were William, Robert, and Walter Dowie. Ruby was the name of his older sister.
