This death came as a shock to many, including family and friends and this has brought out an air of grief and mourning. One of the statements issued is as follows; “Today marks the 9th year anniversary of my job at the YMCA, as I began working here on January 22, 2014, making today the anniversary of my employment here. This past Friday, January 20th, while on vacation in Orlando, Florida, 67-year-old Larry Whittlesey, who had been a significant source of inspiration for me throughout my whole life, went away unexpectedly.
His death occurred on the 23rd day of his vacation. In the very same city where I had our very first meeting with each other in the year 2015, both of us were present. This one hit me exactly where it hurts, in the stomach. Larry had a big impact on my interest in the Y, particularly at the beginning of my membership there, and I credit a lot of that to him. It moved and honored me that he included me as a presenter and contributor on several of the national and regional YMCA Conferences that he directed.
I was affected by the fact that he chose to include me. I learned a lot about the origins of Christianity as well as its purpose throughout the world. Larry was without a doubt one of the very best friends that I had at the YMCA. We spent a lot of time together. As I come to terms with how much I will miss him, I feel it come over me like waves. His impact will be felt for a very long time, and the YMCA, in keeping with his dedication to quality, will continue to thrive long into the future.
